BOULDER, Col. / JULY 17, 2026 / AVIATION NEWS – Journeys Aviation, an Avfuel-branded fixed-base operator (FBO) at Boulder Municipal Airport (KBDU), is now offering UL94 aviation gasoline (avgas), marking another step forward in expanding access to unleaded aviation fuel for eligible piston-engine aircraft.
The first shipment—1,800 gallons of UL94—arrived at the FBO on June 30, followed by a ribbon-cutting and ceremonial first fueling on July 10. The fuel—produced by Indiana’s Swift Fuels—will remain a permanent offering alongside traditional 100-octane low lead (100LL) avgas, providing aircraft operators with another fueling option when their aircraft are approved to use unleaded fuel.
“Providing Swift Fuels UL94 at KBDU gives aircraft operators a dependable unleaded option while supporting efficient fueling operations,” said Andrew McKenna, president of Journeys Aviation. “Working with fuel producer Swift Fuels, our fuel supplier Avfuel, City of Boulder Airport Manager Eric Vences, and the Colorado Department of Transportation Aeronautics Division has enabled us to bring UL94 to Boulder Municipal Airport. Journeys Aviation is pleased to offer this unleaded product and coordinate fueling of aircraft with UL94 during business hours.”
UL94 is a 94-octane unleaded aviation gasoline that is approved for use in more than 70% of the United States’ piston-engine fleet. By eliminating tetraethyl lead from the fuel, UL94 helps reduce lead emissions while maintaining the performance standards required for eligible aircraft.
Aircraft operators are encouraged to plan their fueling in advance and confirm fuel compatibility with aircraft documentation. Aircraft using UL94 must have the appropriate supplemental type certificate (STC)—an FAA-approved authorization verifying eligibility for the fuel. The required STCs may be obtained from Swift Fuels (swiftfuelsavgas.com/stc). The cost of the STCs will be reimbursed by the City of Boulder.
Furthermore, UL94 will be available at the same price as 100LL, subsidized by a CDOT grant to the City of Boulder.
Journeys Aviation will store UL94 in a dedicated 2,000-gallon fuel tank provided by Swift Fuels, ensuring a consistent supply for customers while continuing to offer 100LL for aircraft that require it.
